With Election Day eight days away, United States President Barack Obama is scheduled to be in Chapel Hill on Wednesday campaigning for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
Obama is set to speak on the UNC campus at the Michael Hooker Fields, according to the university. The event is being hosted by the UNC – Chapel Hill Young Democrats in an effort to rally student support.
Clinton and her surrogates have made frequent stops in the Tar Heel state, as has Republican nominee Donald Trump and members of his team.
Recent surveys have shown Clinton with a lead among likely North Carolina voters – and a large head start among those who have early voted. North Carolina has been called a “must-have state” if Trump is going to win the race for the White House.
Wednesday’s event is free and open to the public. Tickets are encouraged to expedite entrance but are not required. You can register for a ticket online or pick up a ticket between noon and seven o’clock Tuesday evening, if available at the Morehead Planetarium on Franklin Street. A tweet from Daily Tar Heel editor-in-chief Jane Wester showed long lines on Monday outside the planetarium to register for tickets to the event.
Hooker Fields will open at 12:30 on Wednesday for entrance to the event. Attendees will go through “airport-like security,” according to UNC.
The trip from Obama will also cause road closures and disruptions to normal traffic and parking patterns, especially along South Road.
This story will be updated as more information is made available.
