The Town of Hillsborough is accepting proposals from contractors to begin restoration of the Colonial Inn property in Hillsborough.

The town is considering taking the property by eminent domain, said Mayor Tom Stevens, since the historic building has been neglected during 13 years of private ownership.

The Colonial Inn at 153 West King Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Currently, the town is looking for a contractor to do pre-development work.

“It’s the equivalent of making it shovel ready, just preparing and doing a lot of the pre-work that would be necessary in terms of architecture and site planning,” said Stevens.

After which, the town hopes to turn the site over to a private company to operate.

When the town received a proposal from one firm, they decided to solicit proposal from others.

“We wanted to make sure that we had given opportunities if there are private companies or there are other that want to do the same service that they could certainly also submit a proposal,” said Stevens.

Stevens said this way the town has choices and can make the best decision.

“We want to have as much information or as much options going forward as we wanted,” said Stevens.

Interested firms must send an electronic proposal by March 31, including services offered, an approximate schedule and anticipated fees.
