The UNC women’s tennis season came to an end Friday night in Georgia, as the No. 5 overall seed Tar Heels fell to No. 4 Texas A&M 4-3 in the NCAA quarterfinals.
Carolina took an early lead in what proved to be a back-and-forth match, winning the doubles point thanks to victories on No. 2 and No. 3 court. Already up 1-0, UNC then took a 2-0 lead after Oby Kajuru defeated the Aggies’ Mia Kupres 6-2, 6-2 on No. 2 court for the first singles decision of the night.
But the Aggies turned the tide after that, as top-ranked singles player Lucciana Perez thumped UNC’s Reese Brantmeier (ranked No. 2) in straight sets on No. 1. Tatum Evans fell in straight sets on No. 3 and Maddy Zampardo did the same on No. 4, giving Texas A&M a 3-2 lead in the match and putting the Aggies a point away from advancing.
On No. 6, UNC’s Thea Rabman kept the Tar Heels alive despite dropping the second set of her match. Rabman defeated the Aggies’ Daria Smetannikov 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to even the match at 3-3. It came down to No. 5 court, where freshman Anna Frey battled Texas A&M’s Violeta Martinez. Frey lost the first set but came back to win the second, and the two women battled to a tiebreak in the deciding third. Martinez eventually won that tiebreak 7-5, giving the match to the Aggies.
UNC ends the season with a 27-4 overall record, while Texas A&M advances to the national semifinals to take on No. 1 overall seed Georgia.
