The Diamond Heels fell behind early and could not complete a three-game sweep of NC State in Raleigh Saturday, losing 7-2 in the regular season finale.

The Wolfpack struck for two runs in the first inning against Carolina starter Folger Boaz, and it was the start of a long afternoon for UNC pitching. NC State banged out 13 total hits, including back-to-back home runs against Boaz in the fifth inning to extend its lead to 4-1. UNC managed just four hits, with its two runs coming on solo shots from Cooper Nicholson in the second inning and Gavin Gallaher in the eighth.

UNC finishes the regular season 43-10-1 and 22-8 in ACC play, tying the team’s most league wins in a season under head coach Scott Forbes. Saturday’s loss was also just the third in a true road game for Carolina, which finishes the regular season 14-3 in such contests.

The Diamond Heels will be the No. 2 seed in next week’s ACC Tournament in Charlotte, where they are the defending champions. As a top four seed, UNC will receive a double bye into the tournament quarterfinals. Georgia Tech is the ACC regular season champion with a 25-5 league record and will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Florida State (19-11) is the No. 3 seed, and either Wake Forest or Boston College will be the No. 4 seed, depending on results elsewhere in the ACC Saturday.
