UNC Baseball Cruises by UNC-Wilmington for 3rd Consecutive Win

The Diamond Heels scored five runs in the first inning and capitalized on five UNC-Wilmington errors Tuesday night in a 14-5 win at Boshamer Stadium.

The five-run first inning began after UNC drew three consecutive one-out walks. Erik Paulsen drove in Gavin Gallaher from third base with a sacrifice fly, and Cooper Nicholson brought home the rest with a three-run home run to left-center field. The fifth run came home after Tyler Howe reached on an error, stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then came home on a Jadyn Nuñez single.

It was plenty of run support for UNC starter Jackson Rose, who tossed five innings of one-run baseball while striking out eight Seahawk batters. Carolina would put up another five-spot in the bottom of the eighth inning, well and truly putting the game away after UNC-Wilmington had scored four in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-5. Paulsen and Nicholson each picked up more RBI during the rally, and the two combined for eight on the day.

UNC has now won three consecutive games and is 31-6-1 overall on the season. The Diamond Heels will be back in action Friday night for the first game of a critical three-game series against No. 2 Georgia Tech at Boshamer Stadium. First pitch of Friday’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
