No. 9 Coastal Carolina scored six runs in the seventh inning to blow open a close game at Boshamer Stadium, and the Chanticleers cruised from there to a 12-2 win against the Diamond Heels.
Coastal Carolina opened the scoring quickly against UNC starter Jackson Rose, going ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning. But Cooper Nicholson had the answer for UNC, blasting a two-run shot over the left field fence to put the hosts in front 2-1. The score stayed that way up until the sixth, when Coastal Carolina put men on first and second base with one out, then drove both runners home with a pair of singles off Walker McDuffie to take a 3-2 lead.
Matthew Matthijs relieved McDuffie in the seventh, but the Chanticleers made quick work of him with two doubles and a single to score another run. Matthijs was pulled from the game without recording an out. Three more UNC pitchers would appear before the inning was over, and Coastal would score five more runs on three singles and a wild pitch. The Chanticleers scored three more runs in the top of the ninth for good measure, ensuring UNC would lose by 10 runs for just the second time this season. Coastal Carolina banged out 15 total hits.
Tuesday’s loss drops UNC to 36-9-1 overall on the season. The Diamond Heels will return to action Wednesday when they host Queens at Boshamer Stadium at 6 p.m.
