UNC’s Caleb Wilson Named AP Second Team All-American

The honors keep rolling in for Caleb Wilson.

The UNC star freshman was named a second team All-American by the Associated Press Tuesday. With that recognition, Wilson will have his No. 8 jersey honored in the rafters of the Dean Smith Center.

Wilson leads the Tar Heels with 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. And despite only playing in 24 games, Wilson’s 36 total steals are the most on the team, while his 33 blocks are only four behind Henri Veesaar. Veesaar has played in six more games. Were the current statistical leaders to hold for the remainder of the season, Wilson would become the first Tar Heel ever to lead his team in points, rebounds and assists per game. His 24 consecutive games scoring in double figures to begin a college career are the most in program history, and his 17 20-point games are a UNC freshman record.

Wilson was also named first team All-ACC and a member of the ACC’s All-Freshman team. He became just the third Tar Heel freshman ever to make first team All-ACC, joining Antawn Jamison and Tyler Hansbrough. Wilson and Hansbrough are now the only Tar Heels to qualify for an honored jersey as a freshman.

Wilson has been ruled out for the remainder of UNC’s season after he broke a bone in his right thumb during practice earlier in March. Prior to that injury, Wilson had missed the previous six games with a broken bone in his left hand.

The Tar Heels will be back in action Thursday when they face No. 11 seed VCU in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Tip-off in Greenville, S.C. is scheduled for 6:50 p.m.
