The Diamond Heels had no trouble in a pair of midweek games against North Carolina A&T and VCU. Carolina outscored the opposition 22-4 on its way to wins in both matchups at Boshamer Stadium.
Tuesday against the Aggies, George Mason transfer Owen Hull had the best game of his young UNC career with three hits and four RBIs. Hull had entered the day with just two hits in the team’s first eight games. He got the scoring started for UNC with an RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the second inning, then scored himself on a sacrifice fly later in the frame.
Hull was in the middle of another rally in the fifth, singling to bring home Gavin Gallaher and Erik Paulsen after Carolina had scored another run on a bases-loaded walk. It was 5-0 UNC after five innings, and the Diamond Heels kept piling on with a run in the sixth and three in the eighth. Hull once again contributed in the latter inning, singling home Paulsen to up Carolina’s lead to 9-0. UNC would win 9-1, with Hull one of three Diamond Heel batters with multiple hits on the day. Freshman Caden Glauber earned the win with five no-hit innings out of the bullpen.
The next day against VCU, it was Paulsen who opened the scoring with a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the first. Hull cracked another RBI single later that inning and UNC led 2-0.
Carolina scored four more times in the third, with Sawyer Black, Carter French and Jake Schaffner each picking up RBIs. In the fourth, Paulsen homered again, this time a two-run shot with Gallaher on base. Colin Hynek followed that up with a solo shot later in the inning. It was all part of a three-run rally for Carolina after VCU had cut the deficit to 6-3.
Another Hynek RBI on a fielder’s choice in the sixth increased the UNC lead to 10-3, putting the Diamond Heels within range of another 10-run rule victory. They would clinch that result in the seventh, with Schaffner doubling home Cooper Nicholson and two more runs scoring later in the inning on a fielding error by the Rams. Carolina won 13-3 after the run rule ended the game early.
On the mound, freshman Jackson Rose earned his first collegiate win with three innings of shutout relief. Boston Flannery and Walker McDuffie also pitched for Carolina.
Wednesday’s result is the fourth victory via the run rule for UNC already this season. The Diamond Heels are now 8-1-1 overall after the two wins and will be back in action this weekend when they host Le Moyne at Boshamer Stadium for a three-game series. First pitch in Friday’s opener is scheduled for 4 p.m.
