A fire at a townhome building in Chapel Hill sent firefighters rushing to the blaze and left four residents displaced on Thursday evening.
A release from the Town of Chapel Hill detailed the incident, with the Chapel Hill Fire Department initially responding to a report of a structure fire around 5:45 p.m. Upon arrival to 205 Kirkwood Drive — part of the Kirkwood housing community — firefighters witnessed smoke coming from the roof of one building, which had two townhome units.
The fire was quickly brought under control, according to the town government and Chapel Hill Fire Chief Jay Mebane.
“We’re grateful to share that no one was home at the time of the fire, and we have not received any reports of injuries,” Mebane said in the alert. “The quick response of our firefighters helped keep this fire from threatening other homes in the neighborhood.”
The chief also thanked other agencies for arriving to help fight the blaze and cover additional shifts with Chapel Hill Fire trucks responding to the scene at Kirkwood.
“This an extremely difficult time for four residents who can’t return to their home tonight,” Mebane added, “and we appreciate the Red Cross for supporting them.”
The cause of the fire, according to the Town of Chapel Hill, remains under investigation as of Thursday night.
