Monday, January 26, head to the Chapel Hill Public Library for “A Warning Then and Now,” a public reading of George H. White’s farewell address to Congress in 1901. White was the last post-Reconstruction Black congressman from North Carolina; he stepped down after the state passed a law disenfranchising Black voters.
The event starts at 6:00 with Sonny Kelly doing the reading; afterward, there will be a panel discussion with former U.S. House Rep. G.K. Butterfield, historian Tim Tyson, advocate Hilary Harris Klein, and Orange County Commissioner Sally Greene. It’s hosted by the Orange County Community Remembrance Coalition along with Carolina Public Humanities.
