The Orange Rural Fire Department responded to a commercial structure fire at the Surety Storage facility in Hillsborough late Tuesday night. Surety Storage is located at 2707 North Carolina Highway 86 South.
According to a release from the fire department, the first engine to arrive quickly reported smoke and fire conditions from “several” storage units at the facility. Once firefighters gained access to the facility, they were able to contain the majority of the blaze, the release said. However, due to the amount of time the fire had burned prior to it being reported, it had spread to the roof and attic space of the structure.

Other departments assisted in containing the spread of the fire, including the New Hope, Eno and Orange Grove fire departments. Multiple storage units reportedly had to be emptied out for firefighters to properly extinguish the flames. The extremely high heat index forced crews to rotate out and rehydrate.
The department reports the building was not occupied as it burned. No injuries have been reported. The Orange County and City of Mebane Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.
