Once again, it’s a great day to be a Tar Heel – one specific Tar Heel, to be exact.
UNC women’s lacrosse star Chloe Humphrey was named the winner of the 2025 Tewaaraton Award as the top women’s lacrosse player in the nation Thursday night, less than a week after leading Carolina to its fourth NCAA title.
Humphrey is the first freshman ever to win the award; she’s also the first Tar Heel ever to win the award as well.

Chloe Humphrey’s season was nothing short of spectacular, from start to finish. She ended with 90 goals, breaking the all-time NCAA record for goals by a freshman and the all-time UNC record for goals in a single season. In Massachusetts for the NCAA Final Four, Humphrey scored an incredible seven goals in the semifinal against Florida and added four more to lead Carolina over Northwestern in the final – getting named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament along the way.
The Tewaaraton Award is the most prestigious national player-of-the-year honor in college lacrosse, but it’s not the only one: Humphrey was also named National Player of the Year this week by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.
While Chloe Humphrey’s performance was the stuff of legends, she was far from the only Tar Heel who excelled on the field this year. In fact her sister Ashley Humphrey was a fellow Tewaaraton finalist, after racking up 31 goals and 90 assists (breaking her own NCAA assists record) for a UNC-record 121 total points. The Humphreys were the 12th and 13th Tewaaraton finalists in UNC history.
