Chloe Humphrey tied a career high with eight goals as No. 2 UNC beat No. 7 Stanford 18-9 at Dorrance Field Friday night to clinch the outright ACC regular season title for the second consecutive year.
Carolina used a big second quarter to flip the scoreboard after trailing 2-1. Addison Pattillo evened the score 2-2 at the 13:11 mark of the second quarter, and the Tar Heels would score three more times in the next five minutes. Two of those goals came off the stick of Humphrey, who had already clinched a hat trick just 22 minutes into the game.
The Cardinal kept the game tight late into the third quarter, scoring two goals in less than a minute to cut UNC’s lead to 9-7. But the Tar Heels blew the game open for good with a 6-0 run across the next six minutes, with two of those goals coming from Humphrey. After the score was 9-7 at the 4:46 mark of the third quarter, Carolina led 15-7 at the 11:18 mark of the fourth.
Humphrey’s eight-goal night continues a torrid streak for the star attacker. She had scored at least five goals in five consecutive games and 34 goals in total during that period, including another eight-goal performance in a win against Boston College. She now has 72 goals in 13 games. Against Stanford, Humphrey’s 13 shots equaled half of the Cardinal’s total as a team.
UNC is now 12-1 overall and 9-0 in ACC play, having wrapped up the home slate of the regular season. The Tar Heels will visit No. 17 Duke in Durham in the regular season finale Thursday at 5 p.m. The ACC Tournament begins in Charlotte the next week, where Carolina will be the No. 1 seed.
