Huge Run Helps UNC Women’s Lacrosse Crush No. 4 Florida in NCAA Semifinals

Carolina is national championship-bound.

No. 1 UNC scored 18 unanswered goals across the second, third and fourth quarters against No. 4 Florida in the NCAA semifinals in Foxboro, MA Friday afternoon, and the Tar Heels overcame an early deficit to cruise to a 20-4 win.

UNC entered the second quarter trailing the Gators 4-2. Florida had mostly contained the powerful Tar Heel offense, outshooting UNC 8-6 and scoring three goals in a span of less than three minutes to take the two-goal lead.

That lead vanished as fast as it was built, as Carolina unleashed an unstoppable offensive avalanche in the second quarter. Chloe Humphrey posted a hat trick in 3:11 of game time early in the quarter, flipping the score in UNC’s favor by the 10:42 mark of the second quarter. Eliza Osburn, Addison Pattillo and Marissa White and Caroline Godine would get in on the act during the period, each finding the back of the net as Carolina blew the game open. Humphrey scored her fourth goal of the quarter at the 2:20 mark, setting a new program single-season record with 83 goals. Her sister Ashley logged a pair of assists during the quarter, and it was her first which gave her 114 points on the season, setting another school record.

UNC kept its foot on the gas in the second half, scoring seven more unanswered goals in the third quarter and one in the fourth. Nicole Humphrey scored at the 10:19 mark of the final period, becoming the third Humphrey sister to register a point on the afternoon.

Chloe Humphrey finished with seven goals, a new career high in a single game for the redshirt freshman. Ashley Humphrey led the Tar Heels with four assists, while White logged a hat trick.

UNC outshot Florida 26-2 across the second and third quarter, held a 22-1 edge in shots on goal and won 16 of 19 draw controls during that time. The Gators’ four goals are the fewest allowed by the Tar Heel defense since a 20-4 win at East Carolina on April 9.

The win is Carolina’s second against Florida this season and snaps a 17-game winning streak for the Gators. UNC is now 21-0 this season. The Tar Heels will face the winner of No. 2 Boston College and No. 3 Northwestern in the national championship Sunday at 12 p.m.
