The Tar Heels have their first prize out of the transfer portal.

Jonathan Powell, who spent his freshman season at West Virginia, committed to head coach Hubert Davis and UNC late Tuesday night.

Powell started 23 of the Mountaineers’ 32 games in the 2024-25 season, during which time the six-foot-six wing from Dayton, OH averaged 8.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Powell became known for his three-point shooting, knocking down 35 percent of his shots from long distance and taking nearly six three-point attempts per game. Powell reached double figures 15 times, twice notching a career-high 17 points. His 64 made threes ranked 14th among all players in the Big 12 Conference.

Powell is the first member of the portal to commit to UNC during the 2025 offseason.

“We’ve gotta get bigger,” Davis said following the conclusion of UNC’s season. “We just do, from A to Z… So that’s one of the things that we’re definitely gonna address. We’ve gotta get bigger and, in terms of that physicality, you have to have a presence. You have to be bigger. And that’s what we’re addressing this summer.”
