Jaydon Young, who spent the first two seasons of his career at Virginia Tech, committed to head coach Hubert Davis and UNC out of the transfer portal Friday. He will have two years of eligibility in Chapel Hill.
A six-foot-four guard from Goldsboro, N.C., Young appeared in 58 games as a Hokie, including all 32 – with 10 starts – during the 2024-25 season. He saw his usage rise considerably as a sophomore, when he averaged 22.4 minutes 8.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. Young’s three-point shooting took a noticeable dip as his minutes increased, however; after shooting 37.5 percent as a freshman, Young shot just 29.6 percent from long distance as a sophomore.
Young came on strong in the home stretch of Virginia Tech’s 2024-25 season. In the Hokies’ final six games, he averaged 16.3 points per game. That stretch includes a 27-point outing at Miami (in just 25 minutes) and a 26-point showing in an overtime win against Syracuse. Young made at least two threes in each of the final five games of the regular season, but went 0-11 from downtown in the Hokies’ double-overtime ACC Tournament defeat to Cal.
Young is the fifth transfer to commit to UNC out of the transfer portal this offseason. For a look at the others, click here.
