UNC’s Ven-Allen Lubin is expected to enter the transfer portal before it closes Tuesday night. However, according to a social media post from Lubin, the big man is entering the portal “with full intent on returning to UNC.”
College basketball insider Jeff Goodman of the Field of 68 provided more insight on Lubin’s decision, saying it involved a third-party deal and Lubin is “just protecting himself from the potential issues” which could come up following the settlement of the House v. NCAA case, which is expected to go into effect this summer.
“It’s actually a really smart business decision just to protect himself,” Goodman said, “and also give himself some leverage.”
This offseason marks Lubin’s third foray into the portal. A two-time transfer who spent his first two years at Notre Dame and Vanderbilt, Lubin came on strong in the home stretch of UNC’s season. He scored in double figures in each of the Tar Heels’ final 11 games, during which time he recorded four double-doubles – including three straight in the ACC Tournament. Lubin’s most productive game came against a tall Duke frontcourt in the ACC semifinals, as he scored a season-high 20 points while adding 10 rebounds in a 74-71 loss.
Lubin’s shooting percentage of 68.4 percent (134 of 196 from the floor) this season was the second-highest in UNC program history. He finished just 13 one-thousandths of a point behind Brendan Haywood’s single-season record of 69.7 percent.
Lubin is the fifth Tar Heel to enter the transfer portal during the 2025 offseason, joining Elliot Cadeau, Jalen Washington, Cade Tyson and Ian Jackson.
