UPDATE: Breakaway Carrboro shared an update on Facebook saying they are open to customers on Thursday, August 22.

An appliance fire at the Breakaway Café location in Carrboro on Tuesday evening is causing the restaurant to temporarily close.

The business at 410 North Greensboro Street shared on social media that during repairs to some of its kitchen equipment, a fire broke out.  A release from the Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department said it set off the automatic fire alarm and led to crews from its department and Chapel Hill Fire arriving to the Shelton Station building around 5:30 p.m. The fire was put out within minutes, with damage limited to an appliance and other “miscellaneous contents” in the kitchen, according to Carrboro Fire, who said the initial damage estimates are around $15,000.

One person was injured in the fire, with Breakaway identifying them in their social media post as the technician completing the repairs. The person was taken to the hospital for burn treatment, with their injuries described by Carrboro Fire as non-life-threatening. Breakaway wrote on social media that its team is “grateful” the technician will be okay and they are “hoping for a fast and complete recovery.”

As a result of the fire, Breakaway said the restaurant and café is closed indefinitely to thoroughly clean the space. Tuesday’s social media post said it will reopen once cleared by the Orange County Health Department. The business — which first opened in 2022 — is typically open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays.
