Virginia outscored Carolina 5-1 in the third quarter to earn a 13-12 win in the ACC women’s lacrosse quarterfinals Wednesday in Charlotte. It snaps UNC’s 14-game winning streak against the Cavaliers, one which dated back to 2014.

Carolina led 8-7 at halftime by virtue of a 3-0 run to close the second quarter and held a 9-8 midway through the third, but Virginia netted four goals in the final 6:16 of the period to take a 12-9 lead into the fourth. Kiley Mottice and Alyssa Long both scored for Carolina early in the fourth, but Virginia answered with 2:35 to go to restore its two-goal cushion.

The Tar Heels added one more goal with 48 seconds to go and had a chance to tie the game in the final moments, but a point-blank shot from Mottice was saved. She ended with a hat trick, while Long, Ashley Humphrey and Olivia Dirks each scored twice.

The loss drops UNC to 10-6 overall on the season, and the Tar Heels will now wait and see whether they will earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The full field will be announced on Sunday, May 5. Carolina hasn’t missed the tournament since 2004.
