Two weeks after a late-night shooting left a 20-year-old dead and an 18-year-old injured in Hillsborough, Durham Police arrested and charged a suspect.
A release from the Hillsborough Police Department on Wednesday said a 17-year-old was taken into custody by Durham Police and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation around 12:30 p.m. in Durham. Since the suspect is a juvenile, no information is initially made public on their identity — but authorities are charging them with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony conspiracy, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
The arrest and charges date back to September 13, when police responded to a 911 call about gunfire in a neighborhood north of downtown Hillsborough. Upon arrival, they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds. Cailee Azariah Parker of Durham ultimately died from his injuries, police said, while an 18-year-old Hillsborough woman survived her injuries. That victim’s name is not being released as of Thursday by investigators in the case.
If the suspect is tried as an adult and their case is moved to superior court, more information about the shooting incident — including the juvenile’s name — could be revealed. Orange County District Attorney Jeff Nieman confirmed to Chapelboro on Thursday that his office will seek to have the case moved from juvenile court, which will allow them to prosecute the suspect as an adult.
Hillsborough Police said on Wednesday the investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with the department receiving help from the SBI. Anyone who may have information about the shooting on West Orange Street from September 13 is encouraged to get in touch with investigators. Sgt. Will Felts can be called at 919-296-9553, while anonymous crime tips can be reported either by calling 919-296-9555, messaging the police department through its Facebook page, or using the See it, Say it, Send it app and website.
