As local municipal elections creep closer in North Carolina, the political action wing of Equality NC has shared its initial rounds of candidate endorsements — with several Orange County candidates picking up recognition.

In its announcement on Thursday, Equality NC said it is endorsing Jess Anderson in the race for Chapel Hill mayor and Matt Hughes in the race for a Hillsborough Town Commissioner seat. The LGBTQ+ advocacy group also endorsed Barbara Foushee, who is running unopposed in the Carrboro mayoral election.

“In times like these, with the NC Legislature passing extremely hostile legislation, our communities need and deserve powerful elected officials ready to speak out for social justice,” said Equality NC’s Action Fund PAC in its release. “We’re so pleased to have a strong slate of progressive, inclusive, candidates.”

The organization also addressed a conflict of interest, as Carrboro Town Council Member Eliazar Posada is running for re-election. Posada is the organizing director for Equality NC, so the PAC said it would not release any endorsements in the Carrboro Town Council race this year to avoid any issues.

In addition to the trio of Orange County candidates, these local government candidates also earned endorsements from Equality NC:

  • Ben McDonald, Knightdale Town Council
  • Kris Rixon, Wendell Town Commissioner
  • Anne Robotti, Morrisville Town Council
  • Anthony Sutton, Waynesville Town Council
