Seven UNC men’s basketball players hit the transfer portal this offseason. Not only does it leave head coach Hubert Davis a massive hole to fill on his roster, but it also means any school in the country can recruit the former Tar Heel signees. Here are the landing spots of each of the transfers:

D’Marco Dunn – Penn State

Dunn was the latest of the Tar Heel entries into the transfer portal, announcing his decision after most of the previous six had already committed to a different school. Though many Carolina fans expressed interest in Dunn returning to Chapel Hill as UNC dealt with extensive roster turnover, Dunn is instead headed to Penn State, where he’ll reunite with Puff Johnson.

Caleb Love – Arizona

Love had a bumpy road through the transfer portal. The former five-star recruit initially announced he would play for Michigan, but then decommitted several weeks later. Now, Love appears headed out west to Arizona.

With the Wildcats, Love will be reunited with former Carolina assistant coach Steve Robinson, who now works under head coach Tommy Lloyd in Tucson. Robinson coached Love during the 2020-21 season before departing after the retirement of head coach Roy Williams.

Puff Johnson – Penn State

Puff Johnson will head up north to play for Penn State, close to his hometown of Moon Township, PA.

The younger brother of former Carolina star Cameron Johnson, Puff Johnson struggled with injuries during his time in Chapel Hill. Johnson missed time due to injury in each of his three seasons with the Tar Heels, but became a fan favorite due to his effort on the court. His 11-point, six-rebound performance against Kansas in the 2022 NCAA championship served as a career high point. Johnson will have three years of eligibility at Penn State.

Will Shaver – UAB

Will Shaver, who could never find his way into the Carolina rotation and eventually had his 2022-23 season end due to a foot injury, is headed to UAB in his hometown of Birmingham, AL. Shaver originally committed to Belmont, but decommitted early in May and prompty announced his commitment to the Blazers soon after.

Dontrez Styles – Georgetown

Despite interest from in-state schools such as NC State and East Carolina, Kinston native Dontrez Styles will head to the nation’s capital to play for Georgetown. The Hoyas are beginning a new era under former Providence head coach Ed Cooley, with Styles set to be a major contributor for the former Big East powerhouse.

 

Justin McKoy – Hawaii

Justin McKoy will be making quite the trip for his second transfer of his college career. The former Virginia Cavalier and Tar Heel will play for Hawaii in his final collegiate season.

Tyler Nickel – Virginia Tech

Tyler Nickel will be playing much closer to home. The Harrisonburg, VA native played just one season at Carolina and now will suit up for the Hokies. He has three seasons of collegiate eligibility remaining.
