The Orange County Solid Waste Management Department is ready to host community members for one of its most popular public events once again: shred-a-thons.

The county aims to hold these events each spring and fall, allowing residents, community members, employees and business owners a chance to safely recycle confidential documents.

Solid Waste Management is holding its Fall Shred-A-Thon across two weekends: Saturday, October 22 and Saturday, October 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days. On the 22nd, staff will have shredders at the Eubanks Road park and ride lot in Chapel Hill, near Carraway Village. On the 29th, the Shred-A-Thon will be in Hillsborough, at the Hampton Pointe drop-off site behind Home Depot.

There are some stipulations for people looking to shred their materials. Participants are limited to four boxes or clear plastic bags of paper, with the boxes no bigger than a banker box and the bags being 13 gallons or less. Additionally, the Shred-A-Thon is meant for paper and sensitive documents — the solid waste department will not accept and shred newspapers, magazines or catalogs. Papers should have binder clips, paper clips or large staples removed as much as possible.

Orange County Solid Waste Management does offer shredding services beyond the Shred-A-Thon events. By appointment, residents can visit the county’s Shred Center at the administration office at 1207 Eubanks Road. The service is free of charge, but only operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and has a two-box limit for patrons. More about the Orange County Shred Center can be found here.
