The UNC Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Kamrhan Farwell as the university’s new vice chancellor of communications on Thursday afternoon.

Farwell previous served as a vice chancellor and chief marketing and communications officer at the University of Missouri. The board approved her selection unanimously after a closed session.

In an announcement message to the UNC community, Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz described Farwell as “a highly respected leader” who “brings extensive experience to this role, most recently leading a 120-person communications team” at Missouri.

Farwell served in her role at Missouri for four years, during which the university’s freshman enrollment increased by 30 percent and it earned its first Nobel Prize. Farwell also recently joined the American Association of Universities’ Public Affairs Network Steering Committee.

“[Missouri is] another AAU institution,” Guskiewicz told Chapelboro. “An institution that, like Carolina, has a lot of great stories to tell about the incredible work that takes place on our campuses — but also, at times, there are challenging issues that we have to confront. Having a leader like Kamrhan will help the university move forward, so we’re excited to have her here.”

Prior to her work at Missouri, Farwell also served in similar roles at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Texas at Dallas. She also worked for nearly two decades as a journalist, including a stop at the Dallas Morning News. She earned her degree in communications from California State University, Fullerton.

Farwell will replace Joel Curran in the role, as Curran accepted a position at Notre Dame at the end of 2021.

Guskiewicz confirmed to Chapelboro that Farwell will begin her new role at UNC on Monday, September 26.
