Update: A spokesperson for the Chapel Hill Police Department confirmed Thursday afternoon that the car stolen from Highgrove Drive was located and returned to its owner.
A string of vehicle break-ins overnight on Wednesday left two residents without cars, according to Chapel Hill Police.
An alert from the department Thursday morning shared there were several reports filed of vehicle break-ins near Southern Village. As the day continued, more reports got filed to police.
Three vehicles were broken into along Highgrove Drive, one of which was stolen entirely, while two more were broken into along Westbury Drive.
Additionally, Chapel Hill Police reported a vehicle stolen from Hillsborough Street and two vehicles broken into on Flemington Road, which is near the Glen Lennox community.
Alex Carrasquillo, the public information officer for the police department, said the almost all the reported break-ins have one thing in common.
“Most of the reports we’ve received this morning involve cars that were left unlocked,” he told Chapelboro. “In some cases, keys were inside the car.”
Carrasquillo said police encourage Chapel Hill community members to always remove valuables and lock their vehicles’ doors whenever leaving ones car. He said authorities suggest if you have no other place for valuables, put them in a vehicle’s trunk or out of sight.
The Southern Village community experienced another string of car break-ins earlier this summer. In May, suspects were caught on home security cameras entering unlocked vehicles along Aberdeen Drive, Cobble Ridge Drive, Highgrove Drive, Highstream Place, and Parkview Crescent.
