Chapel Hill Police are urging residents to keep vehicles safe and secure after a recent string of car break-ins earlier this week.

Police say they received six reports of vehicle break-ins on Wednesday and Thursday – all in southwest Chapel Hill, in Southern Village and nearby neighborhoods.

The break-ins were reported on Aberdeen Drive, Cobble Ridge Drive, Highgrove Drive, Highstream Place, and Parkview Crescent. Police say in each of the six cases, the vehicles had been left unlocked.

In one case, the suspects were filmed by home security cameras.

Police say it’s important to lock your vehicle when you’re leaving it unattended, and store valuables out of sight. If you can’t park in a garage, it’s best to park in well-lit areas with lots of other vehicles or pedestrians around to discourage would-be criminals.

If you have any information about these break-ins, call 911 or contact Chapel Hill Police during business hours at 919-968-2760. You can also leave anonymous tips with Crime Stoppers, 24 hours a day, by calling 919-942-7515. (Calls to Crime Stoppers that lead to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward up to $2,000.)
