2023 is shaping up to be quite the year for the UNC women’s basketball program.

RyLee Grays, a 2023 four-star prospect from Houston, TX, committed to head coach Courtney Banghart and the Tar Heels Sunday. She chose Carolina from among a field which included Texas, Baylor, Florida, NC State and Ole Miss.

Grays is ranked as the No. 72 player in her class. Her commitment makes a strong UNC recruiting class even stronger. Carolina has already secured commitments from five-star prospects Ciera Toomey and Reniya Kelly, who are ranked as the No. 4 and No. 14 players in the class, respectively.

Like Toomey, Grays brings a potentially elite post presence to the Tar Heels. At six feet, three inches, she will be one of the tallest players on Banghart’s roster when she steps on campus.

ESPN describes Grays as a “low-post prospect with college-ready frame [who] brings emerging post up game that yields results.”

As just a freshman in high school, Grays won the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) 6A state championship, grabbing 16 rebounds in the final. She was a Texas all-state honoree her first two seasons in high school before transferring to Pearland High before last season. Grays averaged 17.8 points, 9.4 rebounds and a pair of steals per game with Pearland in 2022, and was named Academic All-District, first team All-Houston and a finalist for VYPE Houston’s Public School Player of the Year award.
