State Rep. Graig Meyer is set to take the Democratic nomination in North Carolina Senate District 23, with early projections forecasting a commanding lead.

The District 50 representative, who has served Caswell County and northern Orange County in the state house for nine years, got a large majority of votes from early voting numbers. Meyer earned 82 percent of votes with 100 percent of precincts reporting, while his Democratic primary opponent Jamie DeMent Holcomb trailed with 17 percent.

On the Republican side of the primary, Caswell County small business owner Landon Woods defeated Bill Cooke. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Woods earned 58 percent of the vote.

Meyer was first appointed to District 50 in 2013 and was elected to the seat three times — including while running unopposed in 2020.

The District 23 of North Carolina’s Senate shifted slightly due to redistricting in the state. Instead of representing Orange and Chatham counties, it now represents Orange, Caswell and Person counties.

If elected in November, Meyer will replace Sen. Valerie Foushee in the district, with the state senator’s run for U.S. Congress moving her away from the General Assembly.
