It was another hit parade at Boshamer Stadium Wednesday night, as the Diamond Heels won for the sixth time in seven games with a 12-1 victory over Charleston Southern.
Carolina banged out hits early and often against the Buccaneers, scoring all 12 of its runs in the first three innings. UNC’s three runs in the first came on RBI singles from Danny Serretti and Tomas Frick and a fielder’s choice from Hunter Stokely, but the long ball dominated from there.
Mac Horvath and Alberto Osuna each cranked ones over the fence in the second inning, which saw Carolina put up five runs to go up 8-0. Vance Honeycutt got in on the home run action just an inning later, sending his 14th of the season over the right center field wall. Of UNC’s 67 home runs this season, Honeycutt, Horvath and Osuna have combined to hit 43 of them.
While Serretti didn’t send any pitches over the fence, he still had a sparkling day at the plate, going 3-3 with a walk, an RBI and three runs scored. Serretti is now batting .356 on the season to lead the team, while starting all 47 games. Perhaps even more impressively, his 191 at-bats are second on the team behind only Angel Zarate. Serretti has never finished a season at Carolina batting above .300, but has an excellent chance to do so in 2022.
Shaddon Peavyhouse got the start on the mound for UNC, but it was Will Sandy out of the bullpen who earned his first win of the year. After pitching in Tuesday night’s win against Gardner-Webb, Sandy went four strong innings against Charleston Southern, allowing just two baserunners, both on walks. He struck out two.
It was the second straight night in which the Tar Heels scored 12 runs. Carolina is now 29-18 (already having bested 2021’s win total of 28) on the season as it looks to polish up its NCAA Tournament resume. A critical ACC series awaits in Boshamer Stadium this weekend, as Wake Forest visits Chapel Hill for the first time since 2018. It will be the first meeting of any sort between the two teams since that season, when Carolina swept Wake Forest in three games. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m.
