Following his team’s 94-81 win at Duke on Saturday, UNC head coach Hubert Davis found himself involved in a viral moment relating to the immediate aftermath of the game. ESPN cameras captured Davis exchanging handshakes with Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski and his staff, only for Duke associate head coach Chris Carrawell to apparently refuse to acknowledge Davis.

Davis can be seen briefly looking back at Carrawell before proceeding down the line. The video of the exchange went viral, prompting strong responses from basketball alumni of both schools.

According to a story from The News & Observer, Carrawell told the paper Davis “did not shake our hands before the game.” However, photos show Davis and Krzyzewski shaking hands before tip-off in Durham.

Reports surfaced soon afterward of some within the Duke basketball program being upset that UNC didn’t give Krzyzewski, who is retiring after this season, a ceremony during his last visit to Chapel Hill in February.

“Folks inside the program bristled that the Tar Heels didn’t honor Krzyzewski during the game,” wrote ESPN’s Wright Thompson in his story, “The Final March of Coach K.”

According to UNC Senior Associate Athletic Director Steve Kirschner, the school introduced the Duke head coach before the game in Chapel Hill by announcing, “Coaching in his 41st game against UNC and his 43rd and final game in the Smith Center is Mike Krzyzewski.” The in-stadium video boards also showed a photo of Davis, former UNC head coach Roy Williams, Krzyzewski and Duke coach-in-waiting Jon Scheyer taken before the game.

UNC Athletics also shared a photo on February 5 of Davis and Krzyzewski’s pre-game handshake to media as well.

“I actually had a conversation with Jon Scheyer yesterday, and also Chris Carrawell,” Davis said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon. “And I had two great conversations with both of them. My relationship with Coach K and the rest of the coaching staff, before the game, was in a great spot, and it’s in a great spot right now.”
