With many parts of central North Carolina still covered in snow and ice, the local school districts in Orange and Chatham counties each announced they will hold additional days of remote learning.
Orange County Schools alerted families that Monday, January 24, will be a virtual learning day due to “hazardous road conditions on secondary roads” and forecast below-freezing temperatures for the region in the morning. Additionally, all activities on school campuses are canceled for Monday and buildings will be closed to the public.
The school district said, however, meals will be available at the main entrance of each school from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday. Meals will be prepackaged and will be distributed at no cost to any Orange County Schools student, according to Sunday’s release.
Monday will mark nearly a full week of being away from school campuses for the district due to extended winter weather and difficult road conditions across Orange County. Prior to Winter Storm Jasper on Friday, the snow and ice Winter Storm Izzy left in the region led Orange County Schools to move to virtual classes Tuesday and Wednesday before cancelling classes Thursday and having a previously-scheduled day off Friday.
Chatham County Schools is following the same plan, as the district announced Sunday that families should plan for a remote learning day on Monday. The district also held remote learning on Friday due to the eventual snowfall.
“Out of an abundance of caution and due to the threat of hazardous road conditions, Chatham County Schools will operate as a remote learning day for students and a remote workday for staff,” said Sunday’s alert message to families.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools is having a remote teacher workday on Monday, which was previously scheduled due to the end of the academic quarter.
On the higher education level, UNC is set to return to classes after being under suspended and reduced operations from Winter Storm Jasper. The Orange County campus of Durham Technical Community College is closed on Monday due to hazardous road conditions.
