Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools announced it will hold a remote-learning day on Tuesday, Jan. 27, as a result of icy conditions from Winter Storm Fern. Orange County Schools, which also held remote learning on Monday, later followed suit.

The CHCCS system had a previously scheduled teacher work day Monday, and thus was closed for students regardless of weather. But it sent out an alert around 12 p.m. telling students, families and staff to remain home on Tuesday based on the forecast.

The post specified that pre-K and elementary school students can work on previously provided materials and activities, while middle and high school students will have asynchronous web assignments to complete. The system said this will be the first remote-learning day used this year out of five, and thus will not need to be made up by students.

Orange County Schools shared details about its second remote learning day of the school year closer to 2 p.m., saying the very low temperatures forecasted for Monday are expected to make roads “icy and unsafe for travel on Tuesday.” Similarly, elementary school students have packets of work to do at home while middle and high school students have asynchronous assignments meant to be completed on their Chromebooks.

Both of the public school districts in Orange County said they would alert students and staff as early as possible on Tuesday about instruction plans for Wednesday, Jan. 28.

As of 2 p.m., Chatham County Schools — which also held remote learning on Monday — had not yet announced plans for Wednesday.
