The Town of Carrboro is about to get a brand new web address: CarrboroNC.gov.

Town staff announced the change on Wednesday. The new site is already live, but the switch will become official on February 1. Town email addresses will also change on that date, according to the local government.

“This move further improves overall email security while increasing immediate recognition that the Town is a U.S.-based government entity,” said Andy Vogel, the town’s director of information technology.

Carrboro’s current website is TownOfCarrboro.org. The “.gov” domain is sponsored by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA); it’s available only to U.S.-based government agencies and publicly controlled entities. Officials say the “.gov” domain makes it clearer to residents that the town’s website is legitimate and that emails from town staff are genuine.

Moreover, the “.gov” domain comes with increased security measures, including multi-factor authentication on all accounts. Local government officials have been increasingly concerned about online security in the wake of a recent spike in hacking incidents.

Carrboro is not the first local government agency to make the switch from “.org” to “.gov.” Chatham County made the same move last year, after a ransomware attack in October 2020 that crippled county services and communication channels for months.

While CarrboroNC.gov will become the town’s official website in February, the existing TownOfCarrboro.org site will also remain operational for now, along with all current “TownOfCarrboro.org” email addresses.
