Usually when someone is “moving down the street,” it doesn’t mean their entire building is coming with them. But that’s the case for one property in Chapel Hill on Saturday.

The Town of Chapel Hill is moving a house in the 100 block of North Street to the Northside neighborhood following the town’s purchase of the property. The town got the building, which is a single-family home, as part of the Rosemary Street Parking Garage project and has since donated it to the local affordable housing nonprofit Empowerment Inc. After the move, the house will be part of Empowerment’s inventory of permanently affordable rental housing.

Chapel Hill Police and the town government are requesting motorists and residents to keep cars off of several downtown streets between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. as the house is moved. A release from the town government said the house is going to be moved using a route that includes Columbia Street, West Rosemary Street and Mitchell Lane before arriving at Gomains Avenue, where the house will be re-established. Chapel Hill’s Parking Services is asking for all cars to be removed from on-street parking along the route in order to ensure space for the house as it’s moving.

According to Chapel Hill Police, cars that are left on the streets as the house as it relocates could be ticketed or possibly towed.
