The UNC volleyball team’s six-match winning streak was snapped Friday night in Atlanta, as the No. 14 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defeated Carolina in straight sets.
The Tar Heels played their best in the first set, using a 7-0 run to take a 10-5 lead on the Jackets. Carolina held that lead until the score stood at 20-18, but Georgia Tech used a 7-1 run of their own to clinch the first set by a 25-21 score.
From there, the Yellow Jackets dominated every facet of the match, taking sets two and three by scores of 25-18 and 25-16. Georgia Tech racked up a .490 attacking percentage, which is the highest allowed by the Tar Heels all season. Nia Parker-Robinson and Mabrey Shaffmaster each had good offensive nights for Carolina, tallying 14 and 10 kills, respectively. But no other Tar Heel had more than three.
This was the first match for Carolina since the loss of right side hitter Emily Zinger, who is out for the remainder of the season after tearing her ACL.
The Tar Heels still sport a tremendous record at 17-5 overall and 6-5 in conference play. Next, UNC will travel up to South Carolina on Halloween for a Sunday afternoon match with Clemson.
