Courtney Banghart may only be in her third year leading the UNC women’s basketball team, but she’s already made a name for herself nationally. The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced last Thursday it would be naming Banghart as its vice president, with plans for her to assume the presidency in 2023.

“This is a pivotal time for our sport as we continue to grow the game and expand our fan base,” Banghart said in a release from Carolina Athletics. “I’ve devoted myself to coaching this sport for more than 20 years and I feel passionately about the WBCA’s mission.”

Banghart will serve as vice president until July 2023, when she will take over for UCLA head coach Cori Close as WBCA president.

“No one has a better grasp of the challenges facing and opportunities awaiting our association and our sport than Courtney,” WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew said. “I look forward to working with her for the next two years as our vice president and then for the following two years as our president.”

Banghart has been active within the WBCA since before coming to Chapel Hill. While coaching at Princeton, Banghart served on the WBCA’s board, oversight committee, executive committee, legislative working group and stewardship working group. In 2015, Fortune Magazine named Banghart one of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders.
