UNC men’s basketball head coach Hubert Davis isn’t showing any first-year jitters on the recruiting trail.

Wednesday afternoon marked another offseason win for Davis and the Tar Heels, as four-star wing Tyler Nickel committed to Carolina over finalists Virginia Tech, LSU, Butler and Iowa.

Nickel announced his decision just days after visiting with Davis and the Tar Heels. The six-foot, eight-inch small forward from Elkton, VA is described by 247 Sports as “well-built with a physical strength edge to his game,” and “a marksman from behind the line.” The site ranks Nickel as the No. 23 small forward in the 2022 class and No. 83 overall.

Though initial projections had Nickel committing to the Hokies, momentum for a UNC commitment picked up after Nickel’s visit to Chapel Hill. He joins a 2022 incoming class for the Tar Heels which includes point guard Seth Trimble and centers Jalen Washington and Will Shaver. With Nickel’s decision, Carolina’s group of commits is now ranked No. 1 in the nation.

Not too shabby for a rookie head coach.

When Nickel arrives in Chapel Hill next fall, he will join a group of UNC wings which will lose senior Leaky Black, but will still likely return healthy depth, including Kerwin Walton, RJ Davis, Puff Johnson, Anthony Harris and Justin McKoy.
