Live local music continues at University Place this week, as the town of Chapel Hill hosts the Tracks Music Series!

Every Thursday for the rest of September, the Tracks Music Series will feature some of the local bands and musicians spotlighted in the town’s Tracks Music Library. Launched last year, the Tracks Music Library is a free streaming service with music from more than 100 Triangle-area artists.

The Tracks Music Series is being organized by Chapel Hill Community Arts & Culture – following a recent public survey that found residents wanting “more opportunities to hear live, local music,” according to Arts & Culture director Susan Brown.

This Thursday, September 16, the series continues with an evening of rock music, featuring Heat Preacher and Jack The Radio!

Heat Preacher came together in 2017, when singer/songwriter JD Rust arrived in the area from Boone after graduating from Appalachian State. He quickly connected with Rob DiMauro, Nick Stroud, and Hugh Swaso – all stalwarts of the local music scene – and Heat Preacher was born. Released in 2020, their debut album “Before We Expire” was originally recorded in 2018 and 2019.

Jack The Radio trace their origins back to 2005, when George Hage and A.C. Hill first met as roommates at NC State. The band’s first album, “Pretty Money,” came out in 2011; since then they’ve released three more albums, most recently 2020’s “Creatures,” all featuring an Americana roots-rock sound that’s earned them a growing following over the last decade. Their music has appeared on shows like Modern Family and Boardwalk Empire, as well as countless other films and commercial projects.

Thursday’s concert will take place from 6-8 pm on the southeast corner of the University Place parking lot, near the former Southern Season. 97.9 The Hill’s Aaron Keck will serve as MC. Attendees should bring their own chairs. Beer, wine, and ice cream will be available for sale; everyone’s encouraged to pack a picnic or order takeout from a nearby restaurant. Masks are strongly encouraged.

And mark your calendars for the next two installments of the Tracks Music Series:

  • Thursday, September 23 – hip-hop with Rowdy and KAZE4LETTERS
  • Thursday, September 30 – jazz with Katharine Whalen’s Jazz Squad and Dreamroot
