Following a 2-0 weekend for the UNC field hockey team in which she scored four goals and added four assists, Erin Matson has been named the Offensive Player of the Week by both the ACC and the NFHCA. Matson’s performances in wins over Princeton and Penn powered Carolina to bounce-back wins after an 0-2 start.
Matson assisted on two goals against Princeton, while scoring four of her own against Penn. Two more assists against the Quakers gave her 10 points on the afternoon, by far her best performance of the season. The offensive explosion gave Matson the UNC records for both goals (87) and total points (221) scored in a career. In both marks, Matson surpassed Cindy Werley, who played in Chapel Hill from 1993 to 1997.
Matson has accumulated almost every award possible during her time in Chapel Hill. Like Werley, she is a two-time winner of the Honda Sports Award, as well as a first-team All-American, Academic All-ACC student and ACC Offensive Player of the Year. She is also a two-time NFHCA National Player of the Year.
Up next for Matson and the No. 4 Tar Heels stands a challenging weekend in Philadelphia. Carolina will face off against No. 17 St. Joseph’s on Friday and Drexel on Sunday, both of whom are based in the City of Brotherly Love.
