Despite leading to start the fourth quarter on Sunday afternoon in Blacksburg, the UNC women’s basketball team ended up on the wrong end of a 73-69 score-line against Virginia Tech.

Graduate transfer Petra Holešínská led the Tar Heels in scoring once again with 21 points, but that effort wouldn’t be enough to keep UNC (8-7, 3-7 ACC) from suffering its fifth loss on the road in five tries this season.

Janelle Bailey (14 points), Stephanie Watts (11 points) and Deja Kelly (10 points) also scored in double figures for UNC.

Virginia Tech (9-7, 4-7 ACC) tied the game in the first minute of the fourth quarter on a three-pointer by Cayla King, then would go on to hold the lead until the final buzzer.

The Hokies defeated the Tar Heels two weeks ago in Chapel Hill as well, giving them the season sweep.

UNC actually shot a better percentage from the field than Virginia Tech on Sunday and won the rebounding battle, but still came up just short.

“These guys fought hard, I thought much harder than the last time we played,” UNC head coach Courtney Banghart said afterwards. “And that’s how it’s been for three straight games. They’ve found their rhythm in terms of how hard you have to play in this league and now the more experience we can continue to get, the better.

“Virginia Tech is a good team,” she added. “They’ve been in every game they’ve played – that’s what I love about this conference. We have to be a little bit mentally sharper for a little bit longer in the game.”
