After years of planning and construction, the Wegmans in Chapel Hill is weeks away from opening its doors to the public.
The popular, New York-based grocery store chain will hold its grand opening for the location off Fordham Boulevard on Wednesday, February 24 at 9 a.m.
Since the Town of Chapel Hill unanimously approved the plan for the supermarket in 2016, the Wegmans project has garnered both excitement and criticism from community members. The new 99,000-square-foot building, an estimated-$30 million development, was originally slated for a 2020 opening. Construction delays and the COVID-19 pandemic led to a later date.
While construction on the building itself wrapped after continuing through last year, various traffic calming measures on the surrounding roads are nearing competition if not already finished. The state Department of Transportation also is installing sidewalks and a new water line along Old Durham Road for the development.

The Chapel Hill Wegmans supermarket is slated to open its doors to customers on February 24, 2021.
According to the grocery store chain, the Chapel Hill location is continuing to hire part-time employees through the end of the week. The store will become the third Wegmans in North Carolina, following one opening in Raleigh last year and another in Cary this year. Another Wegmans location in Wake Forest is scheduled to open in May.
