The Davey O’Brien Foundation announced Tuesday that UNC sophomore quarterback Sam Howell has become an official candidate for this year’s Davey O’Brien Award.

The award is presented each year to the top quarterback in all of college football. A total of 35 players were named a part of the Davey O’Brien Class of 2020, making them eligible to win the award.

After a breakout freshman campaign last season, Howell has continued to terrorize opposing defenses in 2020. He currently leads the ACC and ranks fourth nationally with 24 touchdown passes, while averaging 315.8 passing yards per game.

In UNC’s thrilling win over Wake Forest last month, the native of Monroe, North Carolina became just the third FBS player since 2000 to throw for 550 yards, six touchdowns and run for a score.

The winner of this year’s Davey O’Brien Award will be revealed at ESPN’s College Football Awards on Jan. 7.
