The K&W Cafeteria location at University Place in Chapel Hill has shut its doors for good.
According to signs posted on the restaurant’s door and a message on its phone line, the longtime homestyle comfort food cafeteria has permanently closed. The signs offer thanks to K&W customers who frequented it.
“We have greatly appreciated your patronage over the years and deeply apologize for the inconvenience,” the message reads.
K&W Cafeteria joins a group of Chapel Hill restaurants who have shuttered their doors amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Lotsa Stone Fired Pizza, Lula’s Fried Chicken, Ms Mong, Tobacco Road Sports Cafe and others have told the community they will not be reopening.
The southern food restaurant also becomes the latest business in the University Place mall to close this year. The Burlington Shoes store has packed up its inventory and is no longer open to customers, while the Southern Season retail store closed its doors in January.
The Chapel Hill mall is in the midst of ongoing renovations, the first stage of a “revitalization” planned by the ownership group Ram Realty. In a concept submitted to the Town of Chapel Hill last year, developers listed the area where the K&W Cafeteria sits as a pod for potential commercial or office space buildings, with the addition of residential units in any higher floors.
97.9 The Hill and Chapelboro studios has been located at University Place since 2016.

This sucks.
K&W’s closing is very sad – an end of an era, part of community. Remember going to it in previous location inside University (Mall) Place in the mid-1990s with my mother, Sunday afternoons after church.
What’s happening in chapel hill? Everything’s closing down!!!!
