Hillsborough to Resume Water Disconnections, Utility and Tax Penalties in August

The Town of Hillsborough will resume disconnecting water service and imposing penalties for delinquent utility and tax accounts in less than two months.

The town’s Board of Commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance at its latest meeting to discontinue the stay placed on such costs and protocols beginning August 1. Past-due water and sewer accounts will begin accruing penalties again on that date, with the town resuming its policy of disconnecting water services of customers failing pay the current month’s bill starting on August 26.

The board also decided the town will resume adding penalties to delinquent occupancy taxes and food and beverage taxes owed to the town on August 1.

A statewide utilities cutoff moratorium has been in effect since Governor Roy Cooper passed an executive order in March prohibiting service agencies from denying North Carolinians water amid the COVID-19 pandemic. At the end of May, the governor extended the order to prohibit cutoffs for 60 more days and also enacted a measure preventing landlords from evicting residents due to late rent payments.

Hillsborough’s ordinance will go into effect as long as Cooper does not issue another executive order extending the moratorium.

The town has a system to help residents who are late on multiple payments set up a custom payment plan of up to 12 months. Those looking to do so can either visit the Town of Hillsborough website or call 919-296-9450.
