Orange County Sheriff’s Office assisted in a vehicle pursuit early Thursday morning with an armed suspect, who was eventually shot and killed by officers from different agencies.

According to a release from the office, Bruswick County authorities issued a ‘be on the lookout’ warning of a motorist suspected of making harmful threats to himself and a female driver. Deputies were told the male passenger was believed to have a knife and firearm, and later spotted the suspect vehicle traveling west on the Interstate 85/Interstate 40 corridor.

During a traffic stop assisted by the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the female driver complied with deputies directions and exited the white Ford Taurus. The release said then male suspect moved into the driver’s seat and drove away from the authorities, prompting the pursuit.

Orange County Sheriff’s Office said the car chase entered Alamance County shortly after and deputies with the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit with Mebane police officers. As the chase entered downtown Graham, the sheriff’s office said Alamance County authorities took jurisdictional lead.

According to the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office the suspect exited the vehicle at an intersection about ten minutes after the pursuit began. The suspect displayed a weapon to law enforcement and an Alamance County deputy and a Mebane police officer each fired at him. The resulting shots killed the suspect.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting. The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office said no officer were injured during the incident and the officers who discharged their firearms have been placed on administrative leave.

Neither the suspect nor the officers have been identified at this time.
