Hillsborough to Recognize Mayor Tom Stevens at Board Meeting

Hillsborough’s outgoing mayor Tom Stevens will be recognized Monday night at the town’s Board of Commissioners meeting.

Stevens, who chose not to run for an eighth term, has served as mayor since 2005. He said in a conversation with WCHL’s Aaron Keck he takes pride in helping the town’s board and staff work together to achieve their goals.

“I think the thing that I can take some credit for is just really helping the board work together,” Stevens said. “We support our Town Manager and can really work as a team.”

Stevens represented Hillsborough during a time of growth and saw the town add several new neighborhoods, a hospital, a community college and the Riverwalk. He says he always tried to navigate making room for new residents while still helping the town maintain its’ character.

“Part of it is keeping that small town charm,” said Stevens. “That’s preserving the architecture and preserving the history. I think the other thing that’s behind that is preserving the credibility of our local government.”

The board will swear in mayor-elect Jenn Weaver along with re-elected commissioners Mark Bell, Matt Hughes and Evelyn Lloyd. Newly-appointed Commissioner Robb English, who was chosen to fill Jenn Weaver’s seat, will be sworn in as well.
