Early voting in Orange County will end Friday, November 1, ahead of Election Day on Tuesday, November 5.
The early voting locations of the Board of Elections office in Hillsborough, the Seymour Senior Center in Chapel Hill, Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill and Carrboro Town Hall will all be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday.
Past election results show the final two days of early voting regularly see the largest voter turnouts. This year, however, the final day is on a Friday instead of Saturday. A law passed by the state’s general assembly last year moved the 17-day early voting period up one day, eliminating the popular final Saturday time. Republican lawmakers, who enacted the legislation, passed it arguing the law clarified the voting period, while Democratic lawmakers argued it discriminated against African-Americans who use the final Saturday to vote.
The General Assembly, however, took action earlier this week which could overturn Senate Bill 325 and restore the final Saturday of early voting. The provision is included in a bill improving absentee ballot rules and increasing punishments for voter fraud, which has wide bipartisan support. The bill is expected to be signed by Governor Roy Cooper into law.
