An impending election combined with ongoing construction of Carrboro’s new library is leading the local government to change an early voting location.

Orange County previously announced the future Orange County Southern Branch Library as the town’s early voting spot for the 2024 general elections — but an alert from the county on Friday said the projected opening has been “delayed past the first day of early voting.” As a result, early voting operations will be held at the town-owned 108 Bim Street building that’s part of the Carrboro Town Hall complex, which is where early voting has taken place the last two election cycles.

The Bim Street location will round out six possible spots for Orange County voters to cast their ballots early this October. The five others are: Orange Works at Hillsborough Commons on Mayo Street, the Chapel of the Cross church in Chapel Hill, the Chapel Hill Public Library, the Seymour Senior Center in Chapel Hill, and the Efland-Cheeks Community Center.

A public opening date for the library facility — which has been nicknamed The 203 Project and likely will be dedicated soon — has not yet been announced. In its latest update about the project on August 14, the Town of Carrboro said the grand opening date will be coordinated between itself and the Orange County government after construction is completed and furniture is moved in. The pair of governments are sharing the $42 million price tag of the project, which will be both a library and civic building.

The August 14 update also shared additional details on the ongoing work. Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and safety infrastructure are continuing to be installed, and the lighting fixtures are nearly finished. Several stormwater elements are also being finished. Some of the upcoming work through the end of August and September still to come will be finishing and painting the walls, installing ceiling materials, and restroom work.

Early voting in North Carolina begins on Thursday, October 17 and will run through Saturday, November 2. Election Day will be Tuesday, November 5.
