UNC men’s basketball assistant coach Steve Robinson was inducted into the A STEP UP Assistant Coaches Hall of Fame during the organization’s Legends Breakfast this past Tuesday.

Robinson has worked at UNC the last 16 years as the top assistant for Roy Williams, and spent the previous eight years before that in the same role for Williams at Kansas.

This includes helping the Tar Heels win national titles in 2005, 2009 and 2017 and taking over for Williams as head coach during two different games after he dealt with bouts of vertigo.

The most recent of those two games came this past season on the road at Clemson, a game UNC won 81-79.

Following that win, Williams said of Robinson, “…31 years ago, one of the best decisions of my life was hiring this guy. He’s been like a brother to me. A best friend, a guy I couldn’t be more proud of. I wanted him to have this feeling.”

Four Division I men’s assistants and four more Division I women’s assistants were inducted, alongside two men and two women who hone their craft at the Division II level.

A STEP UP is currently in its tenth year as one of the premier professional development events for assistant collegiate basketball coaches.
