UNC leaders made the hiring of Michael Malone as Carolina’s next men’s basketball head coach official on Tuesday, as the Board of Trustees approved his contract. Shortly after, the university’s athletics department announced it would hold an introductory press conference for Malone in the Dean E. Smith Center.
Malone’s first availability in his new role is set for 6 p.m. in Chapel Hill — and will be open to the public. The UNC men’s basketball program said Tar Heel fans and community members can attend and sit in the Smith Center seats. Doors open to the public at 5 p.m., with attendees asked to enter the arena at Gate A off of Skipper Bowles Drive.
Joining Malone at the press conference and available for questions will be UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham, Executive Associate Director of Athletics Steve Newmark and Chancellor Lee Roberts.
“Carolina is one of the most historic programs in college basketball, and I am honored to be the head coach of the Tar Heels,” Malone said in the official release. “It is humbling to follow so many legends in Chapel Hill. I know from the many Tar Heels in the NBA how special the Carolina Basketball Family is, and I will do everything I can to continue UNC’s championship legacy while preparing our players for professional careers and life after basketball. I offer my thanks to Chancellor Roberts, Steve and Bubba, the Board of Trustees and the search committee. I am proud to be a Tar Heel and can’t wait to get started.”
For those who are not able to make it to the Smith Center, here is how to follow along the radio, television and online broadcast.
